Do I need to have done Drama before to be able to do Dramatherapy? The simple answer is NO! Please don't be put off by the word 'Drama' in Dramatherapy. Dramatherapy is not about how good you are at drama. The emhpasis is on the creative process and using the arts to explore difficult feelings and experiences. It is not about the end quality of what you have created during the sessions. Even if you don't like Drama, Dramatherapy can still help you. I am trained to use all forms of the arts to support my clients.

How long does a Dramatherapy session last?In order to be able to fully engage in a therapy session, I would recommend a minimum of 45 minutes to an hour. For a group therapy session I would recommend a minimum of 1 hour. Depending on the size/needs within a group these can run up to 2 hours.

Who is it helpful for?I strongly believe that Dramatherapy can support the needs of most young people. Some of the things I have more experience with are; Anxiety ASD Trauma Post Adoption/Attachment I have worked with a broad spectrum of difficulties as well as those on this list. If you have any doubts then please don't hesitate to contact me for more information on how Dramatherapy could be helpful for you.

Are parents involved in Dramatherapy?Although the sessions I offer are for the young person, I very much involve family/parents/carers in the prcoess in order to support the young person as a whole. I meet with parents/carers whenever possible prior to beginning Dramatherapy to discuss the clients history and to explore how I can support them therapeutically and continue to engage with the family throughout the childs journey in therapy. I have a lot of experience working directily with families to ensure the best possible outcomes for the young person.

How long does the Therapy go on for?The therapeutic process can be as long as is needed for the young person. I work in a person centered way and therefore strive to take things at the clients pace so that the sessions don't feel overwhelming or anxiety provoking. However I appreciate that in some settings there are limited amounts of funding/availability therefore terms can be negotiated per individual.
-
Will I be made to talk about my feelings?Absolutely not. Anything a client engages with during the sessions will be their choice. I will encourage exploration and expression of feelings but this will not be forced and limits will be set by the client.
