Beginning

The beginning of a session will usually start with taking a few minutes checking in. This might be verbally - how have you been since last time we saw each other? - Alternatively it could be a physical check in - Using an art form to express how you're feeling today. We might follow this by playing a game or doing a short activity to bring the clients feelings and attention to the session. The focus is for the client to be welcomed into the space and into the therapeutic relationship.

Main Activity

The main activity will consist of a creative method to explore feelings and experiences. Some examples of activities I use are art making, storytelling, puppetry, role-playing and using small objects. My sessions are person centered and therefore we will only engage in activities that the client feels comfortable with. These activities can give clients an opportunity to step into a different role, experiment with trying things differently, use metaphor to explore their own personal feelings and to express themselves safely and indirectly.

Reflections

After the main activity we will reflect on what has happened during the session.

  • How did it feel to engage in the creative activity?

  • What was happening during it?

  • Is there anything that you feel you could benefit from remembering about the session?

  • We can also reflect by using objects or art materials if that is more comfortable for the client.

Reflections are done based on the age and conscious capabilities of the young person. With younger children this will be done in a much safer and less direct way.
